The VDCH – Association of German Speaking University Debating Societies was founded in 2001 by 9 debating societies, shortly after the first debating society came to German universities around the year 2000. Since then, the German debating scene at universities has been constantly growing and so has our association.

Today, more than 70 debating societies are members of the VDCH: 64 in Germany, 6 in Austria, 2 in Switzerland, 1 in Sweden and 1 in Italy. All clubs originate from German speaking universities, but are also active internationally, with the World University Debating Championships in Berlin being the most recent cornerstone of those activities.

The VDCH governing body consists of two pillars: the annual council meeting where all debating societies are represented with one vote and the board of directors which consists of four board members elected for a term of one year. Those four board members and supplementary volunteers who are delegated from our member societies exercise management of tasks within the association.
